Rambo’s Hot Corner Tips Week of June 1, 2016

Let me introduce myself.  I am a life- long sports fan and participant.  I played baseball with former Yankee 1st Baseman Chris Chambliss and All Pro Football Defensive Back Willie Buchanan at Oceanside High School in southern California (same High School produced NFL Hall of Famer Junior Seau).  At age 5, I saw my 1st baseball game on TV, 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers vs. the hated New York Yankees.  I was hooked and mesmerized by the play Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider (who I met after he retired) and Don Newcomb.  Growing up SOCAL allowed me to play all sports.  Funny thing, Golf was not one of them.  Later in life (age 30) my brother in-law took me out to play.  I was so frustrated that day while shooting a 136.  From that day forward I was determined to beat that brother- in- law of mine.  Within a month I was whipping him really good and he no longer would play with me (still to this day we have not played but we will this summer).   I have recorded 2 hole in ones (won a Ford Car at the John Wooden Basketball Classics).

Let’s get to baseball!  I plan to provide readers with hot tips on Teams, Hitters, and Pitchers.  I will be reviewing DFS data for charts and trends that will help you build those money making lineups.  Let’s get started:

Hitters

It’s no wonder the Boston Red Sox lead the AL East.  They lead all of Baseball, season to date

  • #1 in MLB Batting with .295 BA, .487 SLG and OBP .359 stack your lineup in Red Sox Hitters when they play against weak pitching teams.
  • #3 in MLB Batting in the last 7 days with .286 BA, .494 SLG, and OBP of .387
  • Pittsburgh Pirates have been the Hottest over the past 7 days with .308 BA, .486 SLG, and .359 OBP

These guys are hot Season to Date Minimum 120 AB

  • Daniel Murphy WSH – .395 BA, .621 SLG, and .426 OBP
  • Xander Bogaerts BOS – .354 BA with a OBP of .405 (just had a 23 game hitting streak ended)
  • Ryan Braun MIL – .351 BA, .583 SLG and a .424 OBP
  • Ben Zobrist CHC – .351 BA, .538 SLG, and .452 OBP
  • Victor Martinez – .345 BA, .529 SLG .529 SLG, and a .389 OBP

David Ortiz BOS has had a blazing start in this 2016 season, 2nd in HRs with 14, leads in RBIs with 47 to go along with a .337 BA.  He has taken advantage of having the likes of Xander Bogaerts .354 BA, Jackie Bradley Jr. .331 BA, and Travis Shaw .299 BA.  This lineup screams Stack Me!

The Chicago Cubs have a wrecking crew of hot hitters also.

  • #3 in MLB Batting with a .263 and OBP .359
  • Ben Zobrist – .351 BA with astounding .452 OBP
  • Dexter Fowler – .316 BA with OBP .433

I would stack these guys with Anthony Rizzo (11HRs, 37 RBIs, .378 OBP, and .494 OBP) and Kris Bryant (11 HRs, 37 RBIs, .373 OBP, and .508 SLG).

Don’t go to sleep on Pittsburgh Pirates Over the last 7 days they have a team .295 BA, .487 SLG, and .359 OBP.  They are being led by Gregory Polanco – .423 BA, .423 OBP, and MLB leading 12 RBIs and David Freese – .407 BA, .467 OBP, and .704 SLG.

Use your DFS spreadsheet to review Hitters vs. Pitchers and you will be mining Gold and Stacking winnings.

Pitchers

Picking pitchers to start is really simple.  I look at average innings pitched, # of strike outs, and the team success rate (standings).

  • Chicago Cubs – 2.60 Team ERA, 5 SHOs, .201 BAA
  • Washington Nationals – 2.99 Team ERA, 4 SHOs, .225 BAA
  • New York Mets – 3.19 Team ERA, 6 SHOs, .249 BAA
  • Seattle Mariners – 3.36 Team ERA, 4 SHOs .232 BAA
  • Los Angeles Dodgers – 3.36 Team ERA, 6 SHOs, .216 BAA

All of the above teams are at or near the top of their respective divisions.  Great to Good pitching almost always defeats good hitting teams.  Double down when these hot pitching teams play their weaker rivals to max your returns.

The list of individual pitchers could be the “Chicago Story” (Cubbies).  MLB is being led by:

  • Clayton Kershaw – LAD – 7-1 record averaging 12.2 SOs per 9 and 1.56 ERA
  • Jake Arrieta – CHC- 9-0 record, averaging 9.8 SOs per 9 and 1.72 ERA
  • Noah Syndergaard – NYM- 5-2 record, averaging 12.7 SOs per 9 and 1.87 ERA
  • Madison Bumgarner – SF – 6-2 record, averaging 11.5 SOs per 9 and 2.12 ERA
  • Jason Hammel – CHC- 6-1 record, averaging 8.7 SOs per 9 and 2.17 ERA

I want to spotlight the performance of Matt Harvey, NYM who pitched Memorial Day.  He was virtually unhittable against the CWS for 7 shutout innings.  He has struggle this year following Tommy John surgery and has a 4-7 record.  He’s back, The Dark Knight Lives again in Gotham City!

Summary

Use you DFS sheets to find patterns and trends.  Hitters vs, Pitchers is essential.  There are Hitters who will wear out even the strongest performing pitchers.  By the same token review all the weaker performing pitching teams to capitalize on their status.  Next time I will take specific DFS Spreadsheet samples to show you where to “mine” for daily specific winners.

Colonial Country Club –  7,204 yards Par 70

2015 Winner – Chris Kirk

Let me know you read this here and I’ll answer any questions you may have about PGA DK DFS

This is only my 2nd week doing a DraftKings PGA write up so I’m going to try something different than last time.  This week’s write up will focus on Cash games with some names in each Tier you may want to consider for GPP’s.  The course this week is a Par 70 so there are going to be some bonuses handed out for all 4 rounds under 70 this weekend.  This course rewards accuracy over length, and has smaller than average and flat greens.  The field is about 30 players smaller than normal so there will be a premium on getting at least 5 of 6 players through to the weekend in cash games.

Stats to consider: SGT2G=Stroke Gained Tee to Green, BoB%=Birdie or Better Percentage, Par 4 Scoring, Scrambling, SGP=Strokes gained putting, Driving Accuracy, Bogey Avoidance

Top Tier  ($10,000+)

Matt Kuchar $11,000 –  If you wanted you could start every DK Cash game with Kuchar.  He has missed only 2 cuts in the last 2 calendar years.  He has posted back to back Top 3’s and has 3 top 10’s in his last four tournaments.  He is top 25 on the tour in SGT2G, BoB%, Par 4 Scoring, Bogey avoidance, scrambling and….well you get the idea. Start your Cash game lineup with him with confidence.

GPP OptionsAdam Scott $11,300  |  Patrick Reed $10,000

Middle Tier   ($9,900 – $8,000)

Kevin Na $9,200 –  Made 4 of last 5 cuts and his MC was an on the number cut.  9 of 11 at Colonial with 3 top 10’s, his most recent being last year.  Number 2 in Par 4 scoring, 19th in scrambling, 22nd in BoB%, 23rd in Bogey avoidance.  Look for Na to bounce back after his MC at the Players, play him with confidence.

Danny Lee $8,800 –  Starting to round into form as is evident by his 4 straight cuts made.  2 for 2 at Colonial with a T10 last year.  This year he is 25th in driving accuracy,  36th in SGT2G , 23rd in SGP and  27th on tour in BoB%.  Top 15 upside with a high floor=CASH GAME PLEA$E.

GPP Options:  Kevin Chappell  $9,600  |   Charl Schwartzel $9,000  |  Colt Knost $8,300  | Ryan Palmer $8,100

Lower Tier ($7,900 and below)

William McGirt $7,000 – Solid current form with 4 straight cuts made.  Has made 4 of his 5 cuts at Colonial.  Top 35 in SGT2G, Bogey avoidance, Par 4 scoring and Driving accuracy.  Dirt McGirt probably isn’t going to challenge for a victory on Sunday but he should be playing on Sunday and a Top 25 is a real possibility.

David Hearn $6,400 –  3 of last 4 cuts made and 4 of last 5 at Colonial with 2 top 25’s.   Even after the switch from the long putter Hearn still ranks 27th in SGP.  Ranks 26th in driving accuracy and is 4th in approach distance.

GPP Options:  Marc Leishman $7,800 | Bryce Molder $7,100 | Daniel Summerhays $7,000 | Adam Hadwin $6,600  |  Chris Stroud  $6,500 | Johnson Wager $5,800

Daily Fantasy Golf Weekly Picks – TPC Four Seasons

Course- TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas Par 70 – 7,167 yards

Steven Bowditch is back to the site of his 2nd PGA tour victory and the location he celebrated his wedding in 2011 TPC. This week we have over 100 players priced at or below $6900. So we need to find some guys that stand out in one or two key stats.
Weighted Stats : SGT2G, SGP, 150-175 yds , Driving Distance, BoB%

$10,000 +
Dustin Johnson, $11,900- DJ will look to continue his streak of winning at least 1 tournament in every season since 2008 this week. He owns the longest active cut made steak on tour at 18. Shockingly as it may seem, he is 37th on the tour with .380 SGP. Last year he posted a SGP 1.340 here at TPC Four Seasons. Also ranks 3rd in BoB% and not suprisingly 4th in Driving distance.
Matt Kuchar , $10,500- Kuuuuch is 7 for 7 here. Owns 2 top 10’s in his last 3 PGA starts . He is 19th on the tour in SGT2G, and 39th in BoB%. He needs to putt better than he has this year to make him worth the investment. I believe that he will.
$8000-$9,900
Ryan Palmer $8,900 – The Texas native has made his last 5 cuts here including 3 top 10’s. He ranks 19th in BoB%, and 11th in Driving Distance. When he gets his putter going he is not afraid to go low, something that you have to do to win here. 10 of the last 16 tournament winners have broken 7 all 4 rounds.

Gary Woodland $8,500– Last year he had a hole in one on a Par 4, well it was initially a par 4 until the PGA had to change the hole to a Par 3 due to half the fairway being under water. This made 2015’s edition the first PGA Tour event to play to a listed par of under 70 (69). Woodland is 18th in SGT2G , 3rd in Driving distance and 3rd in proximity from 150-175 yds. Just needs to have the putter co-operate and he could be in line for a big week.

$6000- $7900
Jonas Blixt $7,700- Yeah I know, this guy is a lineup killer. I think it’s a good week to use that fact to your advantage. He is 31st in BoB% and is 12th in SGP. He posted a 3rd here in 2012 to go along with a 30 last year. Has made 5 of his last 6 cuts with 3 top 30’s.

Tim Wilkinson $6,800- Has made 4 straight cuts heading into Irvine TX with a season best T11 2 weeks ago at Quail Hollow. 9th in SGP and 1st in scrambling and 6th on the tour on Par 4’s . All 5’8” and 155 lbs of him are in line to make the cut and secure a Top 25 finish.
Under $6K flyers to consider
Rod Pampling $5,700- T22 here last year and 4oth in BoB%
Brice Garnett $5,700- 25th in SGP 49th in BoB%

MLB Daily Fantasy Play for May 17, 2016

Pitchers:

P  Kyle Hendricks CHC ($8,400 vs Milwaukee Brewers)

Through 6 starts this season, Hendricks comes into tonight’s slate with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. Although he does not rack up as much strikeouts as the other pitchers tonight (still decent with a 7.82 K/9), Hendricks has been very consistent this year and he faces a Milwaukee Brewers team which he has faired well against in the past. Brewers hitters are a combined 9 – 64 (.141) against Hendricks and none of their players have a hit a homerun against him . It is also worthwhile to note that the Brewers offence has been struggling recently with only 13 runs in their last 5 games. After posting two consecutive performances with over 20 Fpts, expect Hendricks to produce 20-25 Fpts tonight against the Brewers.

P  Madison Bumgarner SFG ($12,500 vs San Diego Padres)

Over 3 starts in May, Bumgarner is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA and he has faced some of the most powerful batting lineups in baseball (COL, TOR, NYM). He takes to the mound tonight versus a woeful San Diego Padres team that is ranked 24th in the MLB in runs scored, not to mention Padres batters are a combined 34 – 163 (.209) and they have struck out 50 times versus the Giants ace. On the topic of strikeouts, MadBum has racked up 60 strikeouts and a 10.87 K/9  over the 2016 season.  It may seem like he’s a lot to pay for but with numbers like this , expect a guaranteed 30+Fpts performance from Bumgarner tonight.

Kyle Hendricks, CHC ($8400 salary): Hendricks comes into tonight’s game with a very respectable 3.03 ERA and 1.01 WHIP.  He is also facing a Brewers team in which he has dominated over the course of his career.  They are hitting a combined .141 with a .156 slugging through 64 at bats.  The Brewers also have the third most amount of strikeouts in the MLB which could bode very well for owners considering strikeouts are a huge point factor on Draftkings.  Hendricks K/9 sits at 7.8 before tonight’s matchup and he has a very real chance of improving on that number.  On a night where there are tons of stars on the mound, Hendricks could be a great GPP pair with one of the multiple aces on tonight’s slate.

Cole Hamels, Tex ($10 500 salary): Hamels has a very favourable matchup against one of the lowest scoring teams in the A.L, the Oakland Athletics.  The game is also being played in the very spacious O. Co. Coliseum.  Hamels road ERA is sparkling this year at 0.69 and he has always been a consistent source of strikeouts since he has entered the league.  He has yet to give up a home run away from Texas this season and it is very likely that trend will continue.  His salary is considerably lower than some other options that have the potential to reach the same point totals.  He will be overlooked on a slate that includes phenoms Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner.  Take the salary you save from taking Hamels and use it to upgrade other spots in the lineup.

Other Notable Pitchers:

Cole Hamels TEX ($10,500 vs OAK), Wei-Yin Chen MIA ($8,500 vs PHI), Rick Porcello BOS ($9,500 vs KAN)

Team Stacks:

Seattle Mariners (vs  Ubaldo Jimenez  @BAL)

Ubaldo Jimenez has not been sharp at all this season. He has a 4.87 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP over 7 starts this season. Furthermore, left-handed batters have been hitting the ball real well against him. Left-handed batters are 26 of 70 (.371) against Jimenez this season. The Seattle Mariners have a heavy left-handed batting order as 7 of their 9 batters bat left handed. One particular Mariner that has had success against Jimenez in the past is Robinson Cano ($5,300) who is 6-11 (.545) with 2 home-runs. If you do decide to stack Seattle, avoid Nelson Cruz ($4,700) who is 0-12 against Jimenez in his career.

Minnesota Twins (vs Mike Pelfrey @DET)

Pelfrey has struggled mightily this year with an ERA of 5.80 and a WHIP of 1.85. These numbers do not get any better when he is facing Minnesota. Although they have not faced each other often, Twins batters are a combined 8-23 (.348) lifetime against Pelfrey. Over the past 4 games, the Twins have put up more than 5 runs in each of them. For a cheap stack, the Twins core batters are destined to do damage against Pelfrey and the tigers.

Baltimore (vs SEA, LHP Wade Miley):

Manny Machado,  Adam Jones, Mark Trumbo, Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop

The hitters have a favourable matchup versus Seattle’s left handed pitcher, Wade Miley.  The team leads the league in homers and playing in Baltimore, the baseballs tend to just fly out of the park.  There is a very real chance that multiple homers will come in tonight’s game.  Miley is giving up almost 2 home runs per 9 innings to right handed batters.  Even the lefty Chris Davis should have a productive night, he has decent numbers versus Miley albeit a small sample size.   With the power in the Orioles lineup, stacking against Miley tonight should yield favourable results.

Boston (@ KC, RHP Yordano Ventura):

David Ortiz, Travis Shaw, Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Dustin Pedroia

As most baseball fans have noticed, the Red Sox have been absolutely on fire over their last two series.  They managed to score a total of 73 runs in only 7 games (10.4 runs/game).  There is no reason to expect that to change against a struggling Kansas City team and pitcher, Yordano Ventura.  It is not the long ball that has hurt Ventura, but rather the walks.  He is averaging almost 7 BB/9 this season.  Throw that number in with the Red Sox power and there is potential for Boston to continue their hot streak against the young hurler.  I would suggest getting all the lefties plus Betts in the lineup and then deciding whether Bogaerts or Pedroia will make the cut.

How to use our Football tool to generate and Bulk enter entries into Draftkings

Entering multiple lineups is a great strategy to winning.  Our Spreadsheet tool can help you do this quickly.  Here are instructions on how to do it:

  1.  Run your lineups from the Multilineups or Multilineups 2 tab.  I won;t go over how those work here.  But after you run the lineups, you will be directed to the “Your Lineups” tab and see something like this”

chorome1

2.  Press the Export to csv file.  It will generate a csv and save as something like book1.csv.

chorome2

If there is a blank column, then delete it.

3.  You now have the upload file.  Next step is to download the chrome extention for Draftkings.  You can do that at this link:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rotogrinders-draftkings-t/lokmacldfjfgajcebibmmfohacnikhhd

4.  After you download it, go to Draftkings.com .  Make sure you do it in Google Chrome browser.  Click on My Lineups.  You should see something like this:

chorome3

5.  Click on Import Lineups.  You will get the screen below.  Click on the game you time and sport you want on the left.  Then on the right upload the csv file.

chorome4

then click upload lineups.

Note:  sometimes error messages may show up like below when a name doesnt exactly match.  But it will give you choices and you just need to pick the choice of the guy.  See below.  Draftkings doesn’t recognize Christopher Ivory, but below it asks if you want to use Chris Ivory.  Just click that you do.

then you should get:

Once you get that, you will have those lineups in your My Lineups tab.  Now just find contests in the Lobby and choose those lineups. to play!

Week 1 NFL Picks on our Lineup optimizer

So for this first week I wanted to give top picks for the week and also wanted to test out my optimizer. In the past my optimizer would look at projections and salary and give you the top lineups. However many people just know who they like but they don’t make projections.

One I came across was Matthew Berry from ESPN. He gives his love hate for the week, but doesn’t say how much each person would score. So I decided for this article to not give my picks for week 1 but to take Matthew Berry’s love list of people he likes for week 1 and run it through my lineup optimizer that doesn’t look at projected score. You rank the players from 1 to 5 and the spreadsheet will pick lineups from those. The players you listed as 5 will show up in more lineups than guys you rate as a 3 or 4.

Berry’s article is at: http://espn.go.com/fantasy/football/story/_/page/TMR150910/matthew-berry-love-hate-list-sleepers-busts-best-starts-sits-fantasy-football-week-1

I won’t go through it all, but some big names he likes are Rodgers, Ryan, Murray, Cobb and Julio. HE also lists lower priced guys.

So I ran his loves through my spreadsheet and it spit out 30 lineups. The csv file is below:

week 1 matthew berry

It is in csv format so you can upload it to Draftkings and have 30 lineups all set to go!

Here are the lineups:

Good luck in week 1!

How to Use Solver to create a daily fantasy football lineup for Fanduel

Many people use Excel for helping them in choosing their daily fantasy lineups.  Using Solver in Excel is a great way to help narrow down who you want to choose in your lineups.  However Solver can be tricky.  Even after using it for a long time, I still run into issues.  So I made this video on how to use solver to pick your daily fantasy football lineup for Fanduel.

I already made one for baseball.  It is at https://optimizelineups.com/2015/05/06/how-to-use-solver-in-excel-to-generate-optimal-lineups-for-daily-fantasy-sports/

This video below will explain how to set up your spreadsheet.  Tells you that Solver only looks at the top 200 records so you need to sort them for the best players to be at the top.  It shows how to set up the constraints for solver and the type of Solver program to use.  While it is similar to the baseball one, it has some differences so please let me know if you run into problems.

How to use Excel Solver to create a lineup with a Flex or Utility spot

In a previous blog post, I made a video showing how to run an optimal lineup in Excel using Solver.  That post is here.  That post showed a straight forward lineup without a flex spot.  However, some websites require you to pick a flex or utility spot.  That makes it a little trickier.

Click here to download the spreadsheet

I’m not going to go over every step again of setting this up for Solver. But I will describe the main differences. The main difference is to change the Solver requirements for each position. Say we want to add one utility spot. Instead of entering into Solver an exact match, we need to make a minimum and maximum.

For example, for 1B, instead of saying we want one first baseman, we will say we want a minimum of 1 but a maximum of 2 first basemen. Then you have to set that up for all the positions. In addition, you need to make sure the total number of players is updated. This way Solver will pull the correct number of players and find which positional player will be chosen for the utility spot.

Difference by VLOOKUP and INDEX MATCH in Daily Fantasy Sports

The Vlookup function is used by many Excel users and is very powerful. The Index…Match nested function is not used by many people but it is more powerful than the Vlookup. However, that extra power is not always needed, as it is more complex to understand.

I made a video to help explain the differences. The main difference is that the Vlookup function needs to have the item you are looking for in the leftmost column. So it will only pull from left to right . However the Index Match let’s you pull any column you want.

I explain it in better detail in my video.
